How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit reading, then multiply the difference by 5/9. Multiplying first and subtracting 32 afterwards does not produce the same result.
Worked examples
68 °F ≈ 20 °C
(68 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 20
A weather reading of 68 °F is 20 °C.
350 °F ≈ 176.6666667 °C
(350 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 176.6666667
An oven setting of 350 °F corresponds to about 176.66667 °C. This is the numerical conversion; choose an appliance setting according to the recipe and oven instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Is 100 °F the same as 100 °C?
No. 100 °F is approximately 37.77778 °C, while 100 °C is 212 °F. The numerical readings match only at −40 degrees.
What is the lowest Fahrenheit temperature accepted?
The lower bound is absolute zero: −459.67 °F, equivalent to −273.15 °C. Lower readings are rejected.
Does a drop of 9 °F mean a drop of −12.78 °C?
No. Temperature differences do not use the 32-degree offset. A drop of 9 °F is a drop of 5 °C. Use the full formula only for a temperature reading.
