How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Multiply the Celsius reading by 9/5 (or 1.8), then add 32. The addition aligns the two scales: 0 °C is 32 °F, rather than 0 °F.
Worked examples
20 °C ≈ 68 °F
(20 × 9/5) + 32 ≈ 68
A weather reading of 20 °C is 68 °F.
180 °C ≈ 356 °F
(180 × 9/5) + 32 ≈ 356
A recipe temperature of 180 °C converts to 356 °F. This changes the temperature scale only; it does not adjust for fan-assisted ovens or cooking time.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I add 32 after multiplying?
The scale origins differ as well as the degree sizes. Multiplication changes the size of each degree; adding 32 aligns 0 °C with 32 °F.
How do I convert a temperature increase of 10 °C?
For an interval, multiply by 9/5 only: an increase of 10 °C is an increase of 18 °F. Do not add 32. This page’s calculator is for absolute scale readings, not intervals.
Can I convert negative Celsius temperatures?
Yes, down to absolute zero at −273.15 °C. The converter rejects values below that physical lower bound.
